Go Energy Star Today!

energy star logo vectorConsidering a new water heater for your home? Food For Thought: By heating water only when it's needed, ENERGY STAR certified gas tankless water heaters cut water heating expenses, while also providing continuous hot water delivery. Gas tankless models are a great choice for new construction and major remodeling, but are also becoming popular as a replacement for gas storage water heaters.

Whole-home gas tankless water heaters apply the same principle to heat water as standard gas water heaters, but without a storage tank. They save energy by heating water only when needed, eliminating energy lost during standby operation. When a hot water tap is turned on in the home, cold water is drawn into the water heater. A flow sensor activates the gas burner, which warms the heat exchanger. Incoming cold water encircles the heat exchanger and leaves the heater at its set-point temperature. Combustion gases safely exit through a dedicated, sealed vent system. By heating water only when needed, instead of maintaining a tank full of hot water at all times, tankless water heaters can achieve greater efficiency than standard tank-type water heaters.

Tankless Gas Water Heater Savings:

This information comes from the energy start website for your continuing education.

"ENERGY STAR certified gas tankless water heater uses a secondary heat exchanger to use 9 percent less energy than a conventional gas tankless water heater. The secondary heat exchanger extracts more heat from the combustion gas, cooling it to the point where there is condensation – hence these types of heaters are called “gas condensing.” These gas condensing tankless water heaters, like gas condensing furnaces, require venting through a vertical PVC pipe and a condensate drain."

Save Money and More with ENERGY STAR Qualified Whole-Home Gas Tankless Water Heaters

"If you need a new gas water heater, consider an ENERGY STAR certified gas tankless water heater and start enjoying these benefits:

  • Provides an endless flow of hot water. There’s no need to suffer through a cold shower if you’re the last one out of bed.
  • Saves an extra closet’s worth of space compared to a gas storage water heater. Gas tankless water heaters are small and wall-mounted, unlike bulky tank-type water heaters. Models designed for outdoor installation free up even more space and add versatility to your basement, garage, or utility room.
  • Has fewer worries compared to a gas storage water heater. Tankless water heaters have a life expectancy of 20 years, much longer than any conventional tank-type water heater. And with a tankless model, the risk of tank leaks and water damage is a thing of the past.
  • Savings when compared to gas storage water heater. By heating water only when you need it, ENERGY STAR certified tankless water heaters save a family of four $95 per year, or $1,800 over its lifetime, on gas bills compared to a standard gas storage model.

Savings when compared to conventional gas tankless water heater. Through more efficient heat exchangers, ENERGY STAR certified tankless water heaters will save a family of four $20 annually, or $300 over its lifetime, on gas bills compared to a conventional gas tankless model. If all residential gas tankless water heaters sold in the United States were ENERGY STAR certified, the energy cost savings would grow to $215 million each year, and nearly 1.8 billion pounds of annual greenhouse gas emissions would be prevented, equivalent to the emissions from 160 thousand vehicles."
