ENERGY STAR Established By EPA

Energy Star Celebrates 20 Years The term ENERGY STAR, is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency voluntary program that helps businesses and individuals save money and protect our climate through superior energy efficiency. The term is also used as a Brand symbol, and is most oftenseen with "ENERGY STAR"  as the trusted, government-backed symbol for energy efficiency helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy-efficient products and practices.

How and why this is important to you as a consumer is better discussed in terms of why the Energy Star label was established. Gaining a clear understanding of this label will help you in making smart decisions when making equipment changes in your home, business, or institution. Let's discuss this for a moment.

The ENERGY STAR label was established to:

Energy Star Label - Atlas Plumbing ProductsSignificantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants caused by the inefficient use of energy. In addition, this would make it extremely easy for consumers to recognize and purchase qualified and quantified energy efficient products that will offer savings on energy bills without sacrificing performance, features, and comfort.

Know how the EPA determines which products receive the Energy Star label is How Does EPA Choose which Products Earn the Label?

  • Products must earn the ENERGY STAR label. Meeting the energy efficiency requirements conditions set forth by the EPA in product specifications will result in any product to use the Energy Star label in advertising of said product. The EPA establishes these specifications based on the following set of key guiding principles:
  • Product categories must contribute significant energy savings nationwide.
  • Qualified products must deliver the features and performance demanded by consumers, in addition to increased energy efficiency.
  • If the qualified product costs more than a conventional, less-efficient counterpart, purchasers will recover their investment in increased energy efficiency through utility bill savings, within a reasonable period of time.
  • Energy efficiency can be achieved through broadly available, non-proprietary technologies offered by more than one manufacturer.
  • Product energy consumption and performance can be measured and verified with testing.
  • Labeling would effectively differentiate products and be visible for purchasers.

Going forward with new products every year by various manufacturers has prompted the EPA to revise specifications that regulate these standards. The next question would be:

How Does EPA decide when to Revise Specifications?

Generally, the EPA sets the standard. If a market share of ENERGY STAR qualified products in a particular category of 50 percent or higher that will prompt a consideration for a specification revision. However, there are other factors that weigh into the decision, such as:

  • A change in the Federal minimum efficiency standards.
  • Technological changes with advances in energy efficiency which allow a revised ENERGY STAR specification to capture additional savings.
  • Product availability
  • Significant issues with consumers realizing expected energy savings
  • Performance or quality issues
  • Issues with Test Procedures
  • Fewer worries. Tankless water heaters have a life expectancy of 20 years, much longer than any conventional tank-type water heater. And with a tankless model, the risk of tank leaks and water damage is a thing of the past.

Our recommendation here at Dallas Tankless Water Heaters: Go With ENERGY STAR Qualified Products. Save energy and fight climate change with ENERGY STAR qualified products. They use less energy, save money, and help protect the environment.
